Due to its underground nature, it is difficult to state a precise number of victims of trafficking. However, the UN has estimated that globally there are nearly three million victims, with there being a higher number of women and children. The income of traffickers exceeds 35 billion dollars annually.

The Global Report on Trafficking in Persons published in 2022 by UNODC records, for the first time, a reduction in the number of persons identified as victims of trafficking, particularly for sexual exploitation. This figure for 2020 is particularly affected by the consequences of the pandemic.

The International Labour Organisation provides us with the most recent estimates of people involved in modern slavery worldwide (September 2022) and estimates the value of this criminal business at over $150 billion per year. They also estimate that there are approximately one million trafficked minors  every year.
